PGA WEST® Announces Greens Restoration Project for Pete Dye Mountain and Dunes Courses

PGA WEST®, known as the Western Home of Golf in America™, has unveiled its plans for the next phase of course restoration at its prestigious golf resort in La Quinta, California. The Pete Dye Mountain Course and Pete Dye Dunes Course will undergo an extensive greens restoration project this summer, while the three resort courses and member courses will remain open for play.
The restoration project, which commenced on May 1, is expected to be completed by Fall 2023. The goal is to restore the courses to their former glory and revive the imagination and vision of PGA WEST’s famous architects.
Overseeing the restoration of the Pete Dye-designed Mountain and Dunes Courses is Tim Liddy, ASGCA Fellow, who has vast experience working with Pete Dye and completing several of his golf course projects. Liddy will be joined by a team of golf course “shapers” who will build and contour the iconic Pete Dye features that golf enthusiasts have come to appreciate.

Founded in 1985, PGA WEST® is home to nine championship golf courses, five clubhouses, two private clubs and multiple restaurants. It boasts 163 holes of championship golf designed by five golf legends: Arnold Palmer, Tom Weiskopf, Pete Dye, Greg Norman, and Jack Nicklaus. PGA WEST® has hosted more than 45 PGA tour events, including epic and unforgettable moments in golf history. Known as The Western Home of Golf in America®, it has been owned by Century Golf Partner
The renovation project involves removing the turf on the existing greens and reshaping and expanding them to their original size and character. Upgrades to the greens’ irrigation systems will also be implemented to enhance efficiency and conserve water.
To ensure precision and accuracy, the restoration project will utilize state-of-the-art Robotic “Total Station” technology. This cutting-edge technology will guide the machine grading the greens based on Liddy’s CAD drawings, restoring the original topography with meticulous detail.
PGA WEST® has recently completed extensive renovations on its Arnold Palmer Private Course, Greg Norman Course, and Nicklaus Tournament Course. The resort is committed to upgrading all nine of its renowned courses, each designed by golf legends such as Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Arnold Palmer, and Tom Weiskopf.
